Why is it important for theme parks to be sustainable and environmentally friendly?
Jakob Wahl: While the leisure industry has not been a pioneer in sustainability in the past, we now have an increased focus on this important issue. A survey of our members revealed that almost three quarters of operators worldwide consider sustainability to be very important. This is also reflected in the behaviour of visitors: they expect sustainability. In addition, politicians and the financial world are working on measures that make it more difficult to finance projects that disregard sustainability.

How do you rate Europa-Park’s initiatives on the subject of sustainability?
Wahl: At the end of the day, our members strengthen the regions in which they operate. Europa-Park is a wonderful example. Its region, the Ortenau, is better off today in all respects because of Europa-Park.
